Gift Exchange Rules Generator

Secret Santa is the most popular gift exchange game worldwide. It works for any group size, is easy to organize, and keeps the element of surprise. White Elephant is the second most popular, especially for office holiday parties and larger gatherings where a competitive, interactive format is preferred.

Many people use the two names for the same steal-and-swap game, and house rules vary. Groups that do tell them apart usually play Yankee Swap with a shorter steal chain: the person whose gift was stolen opens a new gift instead of stealing one. In White Elephant, that person can usually steal from someone else, so steal chains run longer. This generator includes both versions; pick the one that matches how your group plays.

For most gift exchanges, $15-$25 is the sweet spot. It is high enough to find something fun and useful, but low enough that no one feels pressured. For office parties, $10-$20 works well. For close friend groups or family, $25-$50 allows for more meaningful gifts. The key is making sure everyone agrees on the same budget.

Most gift exchange games work best with 5-20 people. Secret Santa needs at least 3 players but shines with 6+. White Elephant and Dirty Santa work best with 8-20 players. Left-Right Story and Dice Roll scale well to 25-30 people. Favorite Things is ideal for smaller groups of 5-12.

The 3-steal rule (also called the 3-steal freeze) means that once a gift has been stolen 3 times total during the game, it is frozen and cannot be stolen again. The person holding it keeps it for good. This rule prevents one popular gift from being stolen endlessly and keeps the game moving at a reasonable pace.

Yes! Most gift exchange games can be adapted for virtual play. For Secret Santa, use a digital name drawing tool and have gifts shipped directly. For White Elephant or Yankee Swap, have everyone buy and wrap their gift, then take turns on video call to reveal gifts. The host manages the steal order. Dice Roll works by having one person roll on camera.
