Frequently Asked Questions
Our quiz asks 5 quick questions about your group size, vibe, meeting format, budget, and planning time. Based on your answers, we score 8 popular gift exchange types and recommend the best match for your situation, along with two runner-up options.
The quiz can recommend Secret Santa, White Elephant, Yankee Swap, Favorite Things, Themed Exchange, Dirty Santa, Left-Right Story, and Dice Roll Exchange. Each format has different strengths depending on your group's preferences.
Use the quiz to choose a format, then use the name generator or printable rules to organize the exchange with your group. Share assignments and agree on the budget yourselves.
White Elephant emphasizes humor and chaos — participants often bring funny or quirky gifts, and stealing is part of the fun. Yankee Swap is more strategic, with an emphasis on desirable gifts and clear swapping rules. Both involve opening and stealing gifts, but the tone and gift expectations differ.
Secret Santa and Themed Exchange work best for remote groups because participants can ship gifts directly to each other. Formats that involve passing, stealing, or opening gifts in real-time (like White Elephant or Left-Right Story) are much better suited for in-person gatherings.
